Casting only gives you six lines. The chart itself takes five more steps: assembling the trigrams, placing the earthly branches (nàjiǎ), setting shì/yìng, choosing the use-god, and only then reading the verdict.
1. Cast — six tosses, six lines
Three coins, six tosses, bottom line first. The number of coin *backs* gives the line: three backs is an old yang (moving), one back a young yang, two backs a young yin, three faces an old yin (moving). Moving lines change, and the hexagram transforms into another.
2. Assemble — inner and outer trigrams
The lower three lines form the inner trigram, the upper three the outer one. Eight pure trigrams stack into sixty-four hexagrams — that is where the sixty-four of the Yijing come from.
3. Place the branches — nàjiǎ
Each line receives an earthly branch and an element. Qián takes jiǎ, Kūn takes yǐ; the rest follow a fixed table. Once branches are in, each line also gets one of the six relations — parents, children, wife-wealth, officers, brothers, descendants — measured against the shì line's element.
4. Set shì and yìng
The shì line stands for the querent, the yìng line for the other party or situation. Their distance tells you how close the matter is.
5. Pick the use-god
Career → officers. Money → wife-wealth. Children, houses, safety → descendants. Documents, contracts, news → parents. Competition → brothers. Then judge its strength: season, support, and whether it is drained or struck.
6. Read the verdict
Strength, the moving lines, and the month and day. The order matters — skip it and the reading is guesswork, which is exactly why a one-line answer should make you suspicious.
